On Sunday, December 6, 2009, a one-day excursion was held at the Technological Cultural Park Lavrio Park (TCLP) and a technical visit to the underground hazardous waste repository (UHWR) facility that has been constructed using the room and pillar mining method. The underground area has been constructed within a limestone formation and with overlying walls of approximately 40m constructed from limestone and shale rocks. It has a total area of approximately 2,500 m2 (dimensions 33 m x 75 m x 5.5 m) while the pillars are of a square cross-section with a width of 7 m.
Visit Program
• 8:30 a.m.: Departure by coach from Athens, Katechaki Metro Station.
• 9.15 – 10.30 am: Arrival at the Lavrio Railway Station and transfer to the section of the restored buildings where there will be a presentation of the historical and mining content of the area as well as the modern facilities of the Technology Park and Museum.
• 10.45 - 12.45 am: Hiking and guided tour of the site - Transition through a tunnel to the underground storage area, XYTRE, Konofagos building, entrance to the chamber from where the galleries of the ancient mine started.
• 13.00-14.00 pm: Transfer to Kamariza (Egoilon Chaos, Serpieri Well, French Society Museum)
• 14.00 pm: Lunch
• Return to Athens at approximately 16.30
The program is an excursion without and is an opportunity to get acquainted with the world of the underground, the mine and Lavreotiki and is open to the participation of companions and children.
