More light in the Eupalinos Tunnel
Speaker: Kostas Zampas

Abstract

The Eupalinos tunnel is recorded by Herodotus as the first of the three works of the Samians, which he considers to be the greatest of all the Greeks. It is the middle section of the aqueduct of the 6th century BC and is a tunnel with a deep trench below it with clay pipes at its bottom; it started from the two sides of the mountain and its two branches met in between under its ridge.
The lecture presents the relevant scientific research to date, briefly the interdisciplinary study of the restoration of the tunnel and the work carried out, which has resulted in the possibility of visiting its entire length safely and with more light. The identity elements of the monument are described in detail and an attempt is also made to shed more light on issues related to the design and construction of the tunnel, such as its location, its orientation, the method of excavation, the method of driving the opening, the cause of the angular detour of the straight course in the northern branch, the excavation method, the ventilation of its front and the duration of the construction of the ancient work.
