The Greek Tunnelling Society – GTS (Ελληνική Επιτροπή Σηράγγων και Υπογείων Έργων – ΕΕΣΥΕ) began its journey with its Founding Declaration in 1995, where its initial members also serving as the members of the 1st Board of Directors.
With the end of that year, GTS numbered 77 members and later on, with the flourishing and progressing of underground infrastructure works in Greece, it reached its peak with approx. 350 individual members. Today, approximately 250 members are registered with GTS, the majority of which being Civil Engineers, Mining and Metallurgical Engineers, Geologists, while several other disciplines are also present.
GTS has been at the forefront of organizing conferences, events, and seminars on topics related to the adoption and design of underground works, as well as specialized project presentations for the transfer of good practices and problem-solving during the construction and operation of underground works. All data, presentations, papers as well as video recordings regarding the design, construction and operation of tunnels and underground space, including cases studies from Greek projects, is available on GTS’s website.
Furthermore, the Society proposed the recognition of the Eupalinos Tunnel as a World Tunneling Landmark, the awarding of the Egnatia Odos highway – by ITA – as one of the iconic tunnel projects worldwide, and finally, it was also been the organizer of the highly successful World Tunnel Congress in 2023 (ITA-AITES WTC2023) in Athens as well as several other events.
