Map of Greek tunnels and underground projects
The map of Greek tunnels and underground projects was developed in the context of the bid for the 2023 World Tunnel Congress (WTC2023) by the Hellenic Society of Tunnels and Underground Projects. The data was collected and captured on the map by members of the Hellenic Society of Tunnels and Underground Projects and the Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program (MSc) of the National Technical University of Athens "Tunnel Design and Construction" (Assoc. Prof. V. Marino and Assoc. Prof. A. Benardo) in an effort to provide a comprehensive picture of the projects that have been constructed and are operating in Greece. Essentially, it captures the impressive increase in the volume of underground projects in the country, which have been constructed and are operating in the last 25 years.
The tunnels presented are distinguished and through their principal characteristics by their type / function (road, railway, hydraulic tunnels, etc.) and by the length of the projects (greater or shorter than 500m). Also, projects of particular importance, such as that of the Egnatia Motorway, have been included in the map while maintaining its autonomous presentation, ensuring the comprehensive view of the project. Finally, historical underground projects of particular importance are presented as well as the main underground mining centers of the country, in which hundreds of kilometers of tunnels and galleries have been created – and continue to be built.
In addition to the spatial presentation of the projects, additional basic data and information about the projects are provided. It is obvious that the evolution of the map is dynamic and the members of GTS are invited to contribute and thus provide a continuous update of the underground sites. The aim is to continuously enrich the database with new data in order to provide comprehensive and multi-level information about the tunnels and underground projects of Greece.
Previous Records of Underground Works in Greece
- Greek Tunnel Registry (2004)
In 2004, the project of a detailed electronic record of Greek tunnels was launched with the aim of making it available to the members of the Hellenic Tunnel Registry. The project recorded 32 tunnels in detail, the data of which are available here:
- Tunnel inventory and data
- Register of Tunnels - Underground Works in Greece (until 2000)
During the period 1998 - 99, within the framework of the Year of Quality, a Committee was established by the Ministry of Environment, Public Works and Public Works, with the aim of creating a "Register of Underground Works" in Greece. The members of the Committee were the following:
Dimitrios Nikolaou, Civil Engineer / Ministry of Environment & Public Works, Chairman
Konstantinos Anastasopoulos, Civil Engineer / Public Power Corporation
Ant. Hatzinikolas, Civil Engineer / OSE
Nik. Kazilis, Geologist / EGNATIA S.A.
Them. Tsepis, Civil Engineer / Ministry of Environment & Public Works
Loukas Louka, Mining Engineer
The Committee collected and registered the basic characteristics of all the available Underground Projects in Greece, including both the ones being under the design phase, and the ones already being developed until the end of 2000. All the work has been divided in 3 main categories : Tunnels, Shafts and Underground Caverns, making special note to the ones belonging to the Greek Public Power Corporation (PPC), who was the owner of the majority of underground works in the country
Although the data gathered cannot be considered to cover every project implemented, it provide the most thorough registry up to the project's end date. As above visitors and members of GTS that want to contribute can contact GTS to provide the updated list to the tunnelling community. All data are given in the list hereinafter:
- Tunnels completed
- Tunnels completed (PPC)
- Underground caverns
- Underground caverns (PPC)
- Shafts
- Shafts (PPC)
