ITA – AITES World Tunnel Congress - WTC2023
The ITA – AITES World Tunnel Congress (WTC2023) titled "Expanding Underground - Knowledge & Passion to Make a Positive Impact on the World" was organised by the Greek Tunnelling Society (GTS) on May 2023 at the Megaron Hall, making Athens the center of the global tunnel and underground works community for about a week.
The main theme of WTC2023, and also the goal of the conference, was the recognition of the role of tunnels and underground works in modern societies, as well as the expansion of the uses and functions that can be developed underground. The conference sought to highlight the overall framework for the development of such projects, from the stage of their concept and strategic approach, to geological/geotechnical investigation, to design and construction methods, as well as to the management of their operational life. At the same time, emphasis was given on modern developments and innovative tools used in underground development such as automation, robotics, the use of machine learning methods and BIM.
Lecture - Innovations and solutions in Tunnelling (2021)
GTS and its Young Members Group (GTS-YM) organized on Monday, October 18, 2021, at 17:30, the online lecture on the topic: "Innovations and solutions in Tunnelling". The speakers of the lecture are Mr. Alessandro Boscaro & Mr. Stefano Anzani from UTT MAREI.
Main topics analyzed in the lecture were:
A. TBM: technological innovations and solutions for lower environmental impact
B. Waterproofing: PVC, sprayable and fully bonded membranes
C. Brief overview of protection of tunnels from fire

St. Barbara celebration day 2020
The GTS Young Members Group (GTS-YM) participated in the 24-hour global celebration of the day of St. Barbara, patroness of workers in underground technical and mining projects on Friday, December 4, 2020.
In this online major international event of WORLD TUNNEL DAY, which will last 24 hours and many ITA member associations will participate around the globe, GTS-YM will present its actions, as well as the tunnel projects of Greece between 10:30am - 11:30am (Greece time).
Licensing - Monitoring / Control Methods & Experiences from the Operation of Greek Motorway Tunnels (2019)
Seminar: Licensing - Monitoring / Control Methods & Experiences from the Operation of Greek Motorway Tunnels (16.01.2019 - Titania Hotel)
The main theme of the seminar was to present the safety issues and experiences from the operation of the largest axes and road tunnel projects in Greece after the implementation of the relevant legislation, the procedures followed to satisfy its requirements, as well as licensing issues that need to be implemented. The most important motorway concession companies in the country (Olympia Odos, Nea Odos, Aegean Motorway, Attiki Odos, Egnatia Odos) participated in the seminar.
Seminar - Workshop "Tunnel Boring Machines - Analysis and Case Studies" (2016)
GTS and its Young Members Group (GTS-YM) in collaboration with Herrenknecht AG organised the Seminar - Workshop "Tunnel Boring Machines - Analysis and Case Studies". The main subject of the seminar is the construction of tunnels using Tunnelling Boring Machines (TBMs)
The event will take place on Friday 18/03/2016, 14.00-19.00, at the Royal Olympic Hotel with the main topics given below:

2nd Eastern European Tunnelling Conference: "Tunnelling in a Challenging Environment" (2014)
The 2nd Eastern European Tunneling Conference was held in Athens at the Athens Royal Olympic Hotel from 28.09.2014 - 01.10.2014. The main theme of the conference was "Tunnelling in a Challenging Environment". The scientific program included a total of 60 presentations and 6 invited scientific presentations. A total of 187 registered participants (as well as some non-registered participants) attended the conference on 29 and 30 September, while 40 of them participated in the technical visit on 1 October to the construction sites of the Metro extension to Piraeus.
Workshop: Attico Metro – The constrution of Athens and Thessaloniki Metro (2012)
The workshop will guide its attendants into the metro projects of Athens and Thessaloniki. More particularly will focus in the sections that are currently under-construction and the solutions given in challenging conditions.

International Symposium Practices and Trends for Financing and Contracting Tunnels and Underground Works (2012)
GTS with the official support of the International Tunneling Association (ITA) has organised in Athens, on Thursday 22 and Friday 23 March 2012, a two-day international symposium on “Practices and Trends for Financing and Contracting Tunnels and Underground Works”. The symposium held at the ROYAL OLYMPIC HOTEL and featured invited speakers from around the world.
The symposium focus on the following subjects:
- Financing trends and options for the implementation of underground projects
- Types of contracts for underground projects
- Consequences and impact of the economic crisis on the construction of underground projects
- Current practices regarding the tendering and implementation of contracts for underground projects
METEC 2009 / Developments in Tunnel Excavation and Support Machinery
A parallel scientific conference within the framework of the 5th international exhibition “METEC - Construction Machinery”. Its theme was the developments in tunnel boring and support machinery, with the presentation of new trends and projects carried out with new advanced tunnel construction machinery.

Workshop - Safety of Tuunels and Undergound Works (2008)
Scientific workshop on issues related to the Safety of tunnels and underground works. Main issues that were addressed were:
- The proposals of the European Commission following the new directives on tunnel safety.
- The actions and operation of the Greek Tunnel Administrative Authority.
- Risk analysis methodologies to analyses risk conditions.
- Case studies from relevant projects from the European area.
Workshop: New Developments in Mechanised Tunnelling (2007)
The Workshop presents developments in mechanized tunneling and gives examples of Greek and international tunnel projects that have been constructed mainly with full-face cutting machines. More specifically, the following are analyzed and data are provided:
- Study and application of various methods of mechanical tunneling
- Correlation of mechanical tunneling methods with soil conditions
- Presentation of cases of application of various methods of mechanical tunneling from practice.

Workshop: Analysis and dimensioning of permanent tunnel lining (2005)/h4>
The organization of the scientific Workshop held in Athens on 20-5-2003 on the topic "Analysis and dimensioning of permanent tunnel lining and related issues", constitutes the beginning of a series of events planned by the Greek Tunnelling Society, aiming at a realistic approach and the highlighting of issues related to the subject of underground works. The interest shown both during the work and afterwards led to the publication of a volume of the works presented.
